The only tone control on early PRS set-neck guitars (roughly from 1985-1988) was a mini-toggle, which Paul Reed Smith dubbed the "sweet switch." In an article written by JD Considine in Musician magazine, the author wrote: "It can transform the angry aggression of a PAF tone, virtually identical to Eddie Van Halen's signature snarl, into the muted dignity and jazzy smokiness of a '59 Les Paul."
