Meyer Sound MILO in the Saddle for One of Largest U.S. Rodeos
The word "rodeo" conjures images of small-town events held at dusty county
fairgrounds, but there’s nothing small about the Texas Stampede, held in
Dallas, Texas. On the contrary, the Stampede is one of the largest rodeo
events in the country and features some of the biggest names in the sport,
not to mention some of the hottest live entertainment. Dallas-based
Crossroads Audio brought a Meyer Sound self-powered MILO® high-power
curvilinear array loudspeakers to the Stampede to ensure that the packed
crowd clearly heard every guitar string-bending, hip-shaking note.
The Interstate Batteries-sponsored event regularly packs the American
Airlines Center (home of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks and the NHL’s Dallas
Stars) to full capacity during its three-day run, all to benefit the
Dallas's Children’s Medical Center. For the sixth annual event, more than
20,000 fans filled the stands to watch rodeo pros compete in bull riding,
barrel racing, and tie-down roping events, as well as to catch nightly
performances from such country chart-toppers as Alan Jackson, Dierks
Bentley, Miranda Lambert, and Neal McCoy. The ace production staff, led by
Event Operations Director Randy Lewallyn, along with Kyle Jones, and Greg
Morton, put the event together and kept it rolling smoothly.
“Our guys definitely favor Meyer cabinets,” says Crossroads Audio General
Manager Robin Magruder. “They really like that you don’t have to do a lot of
equalization or adjustments — just plug them in, array them correctly, and
they sound great.”
Crossroads Audio built the main sound system around 26 MILO loudspeakers and
two MILO 120 high-power expanded coverage curvilinear array loudspeakers per
side. Twelve 700-HP ultrahigh-power subwoofers handled sub-bass duties,
while 12 M2D compact curvilinear array loudspeakers, 24 M1D ultracompact
curvilinear array loudspeakers, 10 UPJ-1P compact VariO™ loudspeakers, and
eight CQ-2 narrow coverage main loudspeakers were deployed for fill and
delay functions.
Crossroads’ engineers used Meyer Sound’s MAPP Online Pro™ acoustical
prediction software to help plan cabinet placement and focusing, which
facilitated a straightforward setup. “MAPP is a remarkably effective design
and prediction tool, and really simplifies things,” says Magruder. With the
cabinets in place and no need for adjustment, the evening’s entertainers and
fans could boogie down until the wee hours of the morning.
When a Crossroads Audio project demands the best, they rely upon the
quality, reliability, and commitment to excellent service for which Meyer
Sound is renowned. Concludes Magruder, “All of our M Series, Concert Series,
and UltraSeries products meet one of the most difficult challenges for any
pro sound system: maintaining consistent timbre throughout the dynamic range
and audience listening areas. Meyer has an outstanding reputation for
innovation, precision manufacturing, and customer service. We’ve found this
to be quite true in five years of partnership, and those are the reasons
we’re devoted to the company and its products.”
