Istanbul-based Mikafon Elektronik has installed Community RSH-462 Focused Array™ horn loudspeakers to provide a shore-to-ship control and warning system at İÇDAŞ port, located at Biga/Canakkale in the north-east of Turkey.
Founded in 1880, and with nearly 10,000 employees, İÇDAŞ is the largest capacity privately owned steel producer in Turkey, also operating in the fields of ship building, port operations, piloting and towing, land and marine transportation, shipping, brokerage, insurance, international trade, tourism, construction and power generation. With two piers and a wharf, İÇDAŞ port has a total berthing area in port of 1,680 metres, which can accommodate up to 20 vessels at the same time. Approximately 7,500 containers can be stored on 100,000 m2 at the port, a capacity which makes the port the largest container and general cargo stock area in the region.
“The port is ‘airside’, so it requires an effective traffic control communication system”, explained Mikafon Elektronik’s managing director, Erkan Polat, “Needing massive SPL with uncompromised intelligibility, we designed a system using just eight Community RSH-462 loudspeakers. Each RSH-462 uses four Community M200 compression drivers on an Exponential Focused Array™ wave guide, giving an accurately controlled dispersion of 60 x 20 degrees with a sensitivity of 118 dB/W/m and power handling of 750W programme. These voice-range or tone signaling devices are remarkable, with a capability that has to be heard to be believed”.
“Extreme all-weather design was also a major factor for both the products and the installation”, continued Erkan Polat, “The Port has prevailing north-easterly winds and waves, with the salt-spray of any exposed coast, and the region also has very high rainfall and summer temperatures. The materials and design of the RSH-462 are unequalled for all-year, all-weather use, giving us and the port authorities the level of reliability we need in the system. These Community loudspeakers have provided the facility with a highly effective system and the ICDAS Port Authorities are very pleased with the results”.
